Dr. med Gerhard J. Fuchs, MD, FACS, is Professor of Clinical Urology at the Department of Urology of the University of Southern California. He also serves as Vice Chair of Education and Program Director of the USC Urology Residency Program and the Endourology Society Fellowship Program.
An internationally renowned surgeon, researcher, and educator with 35 years of experience, Dr. Fuchs specializes in minimally invasive procedures for treating kidney stones, as well as advanced endoscopic and urologic laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Fuchs has authored many chapters in urologic texts, and the results of his research appear in dozens of peer –reviewed publications. He currently serves on the editorial boards of several national and international urology journals.
Being himself a pioneer of the clinical use of Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL), he came to California in 1985 with the inventor (Prof Dr. Christian Chaussy) of this revolutionary technology, and set up the first treatment center in the Western United States at UCLA. He proceeded to spearhead a training program for ureteroscopy, percutaneous surgery, retrograde intrarenal surgery, as well as ESWL, and since 1992 also laparoscopic surgery which was offered regionally and nationally. He established a tertiary care endourology and ESWL state-of-the-art treatment center and at the same time trained a significant number of regional, national, and international urologists in those novel technologies.
In 2000 Dr. Fuchs moved his team to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to establish the first full-time academic urological unit at this venerable institution. In the initial years all open urological surgery cases were converted to laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery under his tutelage. Since 7/2014 he joined the full-time faculty of the Department of Urology at USC Keck Medical School.
