Manager, Principal Researcher
AU Optronics
Hsinchu, Taiwan (Republic of China)
Dr. Kun-Cheng Tien is Manager, Principal Researcher in AU Optronics Corporation. He received the bachelor degree of Electrical Engineering in National Taiwan University in 2004, and the PhD degree of photonics and optoelectrics in National Taiwan University in 2010. Dr. Tien joined Dr. Chung-Chih Wu’s (SID fellow, 2016) lab in National Taiwan University. He studied the theory of the optical modes in OLEDs and developed novel light extraction structures to significantly enhance the light out-coupling of OLEDs, which open the possibility of internal light extraction structure between the substrate and OLED devices. He got one-time distinguished paper award in SID 2010 symposium.
After his graduation, Dr. Tien joined the LCD TV department of AU Optronics (AUO). He studied the theory of color washout in PS-VA (Polymer Sustained - Vertical Alignment) LCD (which is the major drawback of VA-mode LCD, compared with IPS-mode LCD and OLED) and developed various approaches to improve viewing angle, including the new pixel design of PS-VA 4-domain/ 8-domain/ 12-domain, the new sub-pixel-rendering algorithm and driving method for 2- or 3-gamma tables of spatial division, the optical design of the microstructure on the top of the LCD, etc. Dr. Tien has made major contributions in continuously advancing the performances of the PS-VA LCD, keeping it competing against IPS LCDs or even OLED displays. Most importantly, most of Dr. Tien’s innovations have been successfully implemented into real products (7-times AUO patent asset award), demonstrating his excellence in putting concepts and inventions into practice.
To date, Dr. Tien totally has 10 journal papers and 22 international conference papers (12/22 are SID symposium papers, and 13/22 are 1st author papers), 85 issued patents (23 US/ 33 TW/ 28 CN/ 1 DE; 1st inventor of 45 patents), and 28 patents in application (3 US/ 16 TW/ 9 CN) in worldwide.
