Since 1995, K. Käläntär has been working on optical devices and modules for LCD units. He established the BLU Optics, and published more than 95 papers and articles. He holds more than 96 issued patents and patents pending worldwide. He has authored and supervised three books in Japanese titled (1) LCD Backlighting Technologies, (2) LED Backlighting Technologies, and (3) Technological Lighting Exploitation for LCDs. He also has written more than 10 book chapters in Japanese and in English on Display Electronics.
In May 2007, he received the Special Recognition Award from The Society for Information Display (SID) for his outstanding contribution for introducing a novel optical-design method for the light guides used in the LCD backlights. He was elected as Senior Member of the SID in 2008. He received a Distinguished Paper award of SID2011. He was awarded SID Fellow in 2013. He received Research and Development Award from the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society JLCS2016.
Dr. Käläntär is an expert in International Electrotechnical Commission, IEC. Dr. Käläntär is a Standards Development Expert in Japan.
Dr. Käläntär served as Program Vice-Chair of SID2010 and he was the first Chair for the Special Topic on Solid-State Lighting (Novel Lighting) at the SID2010. He served as program chair for LIT dedicated to Solid-State Lighting for IDW2010. He served as associate editor for a special issue of JSID (Journal of Society for Information Display) on Solid-State Lighting. He is a member of the program committees of FMC and DES of the International Display Workshops (IDW), in Japan, as well as founder of DES working group. He served as chair for the FMC Workshop Group at IDW for 3 years (Japan) and chair for the Display Systems (DSY) sub-committee of the SID (USA) for 2 years. He is serving as SID-DSY chair for 2021.
