MicroLED & MiniLED Technology Advances and Outlook

Apple launched new iPad Pro embedded with MiniLED backlight in Q2’21 and the sales volume is quite well. Apple also released MiniLED MacBook Pro in Q4’21 and become hot item in notebook.
Sony first demonstrated a MicroLED TV at CES in 2012 but the product was never released to the general public. Sony later commercialized modular displays for video walls and Samsung Visual Display followed suit by launching “the Wall”. The Wall is also a modular video wall, with pixel pitches of 1.68mm, 1.26mm and 0.84mm.
There is no clear definition about MiniLED or MicroLED in display industry. Either MiniLED or MicroLED is mounted huge amount of tiny LED chips on backplane (PCB, Glass, etc.) with high-density driving control. In DSCC, our definition of MiniLED is the backlight of display and MicroLED is the direct-view display, replacement of LCD, OLED, etc.

MicroLED &MiniLED is one of the emerging display technologies and has high potential to compete with other existing or new display technologies. Although the cost of MicroLED & MiniLED is high and the yield is low now, we believe people will find the way to overcome hurdles to let MicroLED & MiniLED cost can become affordable. DSCC predicts MiniLED will start to dominate LED industry from 2023 and MicorLED will have a significant jump after 2025.
