Scaling challenges and design requirements needed to support high external color conversion efficiency (ECCE) for light emitters based on blue emitting Micro LEDs and QD color conversion films are quantified using a novel physical model. The model is shown to reproduce published data of ECCE dependence on quantum dot (QD) film thickness. Using this model, it is shown that scaling the QD film thickness from 10µm to 1µm in order to minimize cross talk and reduce manufacturing cost results in ECCE reductions of ~2x and ~10x for red and green QD films, respectively. Moreover, the blue leakage is found to be ~1% for QD film thickness of ~2.5µm.
