Parents and caregivers of children with IDD can often benefit from accessing specialized support from community professionals. People from marginalized cultures and communities frequently prefer unique and culturally sensitive support that is different from the general population. Join Rachel Nemhauser, Patricia Gonzalez and Richard Mullen from The Arc of King County to explore how to individualize and effectively support families from diverse backgrounds. Topics include building trust, cultural humility, working with interpreters and more.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the unique cultural needs of African American and Latino parents and caregivers of children with IDD in order to compassionately and effectively offer relevant resources and parent support.
Consider the historical, cultural, political and linguistic needs of the individual reaching out for help, and offer support in a format that's comfortable and appropriate for the parent in need.
Confidently plan programs, workshops, trainings, support and social events for culturally diverse communities of parents and caregivers of children with IDD.
