Session Description: Did you know that youth with disabilities are more likely to enter the juvenile justice system? The special education “school-to-prison pipeline” refers to policies and practices that push students with disabilities out of classrooms and into the juvenile criminal justice system. The prevalence of youth with disabilities in juvenile corrections is three to five times greater than youth without disabilities, and 85% of youth in juvenile detention facilities have special education qualifying disabilities. We can do better!
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees will be able to understand who youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are and the role of special education.
At the end of this session, attendees will be able to understand how acknowledging a child’s behavior through recognizing our own bias can improve outcomes for juveniles who have IDD.
At the end of this session, attendees will be able to understand how exploring trauma-informed responses and restorative practices can help youth with disabilities.
