Andrew is a 4th year undergraduate student at McGill University currently pursuing an Honours degree in Biochemistry. In 2021, he started his journey as a biochemist in the field of structural biology, in which he purified and crystallized the MPN domain of the MYSM1 deubiquitinase protein to help elucidate its modular structure. In the following months, he branched off into cancer immunology, working with a fellow collaborator to immunophenotype molecular markers of bone-marrow derived macrophages which were cultured from LYSM strain mice, to further explore MYSM1 expression in in vivo models, in the process becoming familiar with cell culture, ELISA, and flow cytometry. In the summer of 2022, Andrew re-initiated his journey of biochemistry by joining Dr. Joanna Przybyl's lab as a research trainee after having received the Glenita Mungcal GIST Research Award from the Canada Life Raft Group. He will complete his final year of his Bachelor's degree by performing translational studies of soft tissue sarcomas, using multi-omic and genetic approaches to help identify molecular markers on FFPE tumor tissues to predict responses to treatment and patient survival for this rare cancer type.
