(P 071) DEVELOPMENT OF A COLLABORATIVE SARCOMA REGISTRY: STRATEGIES TO DECREASE PROVIDER BURDEN AND INCREASE ENGAGEMENT

Objective: The Musculoskeletal Tumor Registry (MsTR) is supported by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and represents a multi-year effort to create a prospective database of patient-, tumor-, and treatment-related factors in sarcoma and metastatic disease of bone (MDB). The MsTR improves upon current cancer data resources with a focus on surgical details and patient-reported outcomes.

Methods: The pillars of the registry effort include 1) collection of research-quality data, 2) minimization of the burden of data entry to providers, 3) utilization of a framework that allows for future modification, and 4) inclusivity. An important strategy used to fulfill these goals was to create “smartforms” within the electronic health record (EHR) with branching logic to collect the maximum amount of critical data in the least intrusive possible manner. The smartforms were developed following iterative group discussions to ensure that provider-entered data elements could not be automatically abstracted by the EHR, were theoretically important to future research questions, and were not overly burdensome to collect.

Results: The data elements required for the sarcoma and MDB modules have been defined and the corresponding smartforms created. Efforts have been made to increase the visibility of the registry at professional societies and specialty meetings with the intent to offer participation to all interested institutions. Twenty-five sites in the US are currently credentialed and in various stages of implementation. The MsTR is currently in development by the AAOS with the expectation of collecting early patient data at multiple sites by the end of 2022.

Conclusion: The MsTR has the potential to be an important repository of sarcoma and MDB patients that can be used to answer questions of treatment decisions, practice variability, complications, survival, and functional outcomes. Future efforts will include ensuring data accuracy and completeness, further expansion in the US and Canada, and collaboration with similar international efforts.
