Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellow
University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
Dr. Andrea P. Espejo-Freire earned her MD from Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador. She completed Internal Medicine residency at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital. She was awarded the honor of outstanding resident of the year for excellence in Internal Medicine by the American College of Physicians. Her interest in sarcoma grew early during residency training, where she studied an increased incidence of sarcoidosis in patients with sarcoma, often confused as recurrent or metastatic disease. During her residency years, Dr. Espejo-Freire also studied the effects of dual-targeted oncolytic measles virus in different cancer cell lines and in-vivo models. She is currently a fellow in hematology and medical oncology at the University of Miami, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her current research focuses on understanding the genomic landscape of angiosarcoma. Specifically, studying the use of advanced sequencing techniques for predicting and enhancing responses to immunotherapy and other targeted agents. She is also the author of a book chapter in epithelioid sarcoma. During the early COVID-19 pandemic, to help with resource optimization and patient outcomes, she authored reviews on the utility of different serologic testing methods and biomarkers in the diagnosis and management of COVID-19.
Dr. Espejo-Freire’s educational, clinical, and research interests focus on expanding targeted trials for rare and aggressive sarcomas while improving access to multidisciplinary treatments for underserved populations.
