Professor of Pathology
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Dr. Karen Schoedel is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian-Shadyside. She completed anatomic and clinical pathology training there, followed by several fellowships, respectively, in bone pathology, surgical pathology and cytopathology. She has been a faculty member for over 25 years. Understanding neoplastic development at the molecular level has been a long standing interest of hers while studying a variety of tissues encountered in surgical pathology and cytology. Although primary sarcomas are unusual, they are well represented in the Bone and Soft Tissue Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh, allowing for the accrual of tumor tissues for research study. Utilizing immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization and RNA sequencing, she and her collaborators have contributed to the understanding of several rare mesenchymal entities.
