o Mr. Smith joined the Sarcoma, melanoma and rare tumours unit of the Royal Marsden Hospital in 2014, having completed the University of Toronto General Surgical Oncology Fellowship.
o Prior to that, Mr. Smith trained as a general surgeon on the RCSI Higher Surgical Training scheme, having completed his higher degree in UCC, Ireland.
o His main clinical interests are in melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma
o He has specific interests in mucosal melanoma, the surgical management of advanced cutaneous melanoma, and fluorescence guided melanoma surgery
o As regards STS, his focus is on retroperitoneal and pelvis sarcoma, and the management of complex GIST and visceral sarcoma
o Mr. Smith has been active in the development of guidelines for rare cancers and is the interim chairman of the UK Melanoma Focus Ano-uro-genital melanoma guidelines development group, having led on the publication of the UK AUG guidelines. He was a committee member for the recently published 2022 NICE Melanoma guidelines update. Mr. Smith is also a member of the British Sarcoma Group GIST guideline committee, and the UK PAWS-GIST consensus guideline group. He is an active member of both the TARPSWG, and PERSARC collaborative groups, contributing to their guidelines and publications.
o He is Honorary Faculty at the Institute of Cancer Research, leading the Translational Sarcoma, Melanoma and Rare Tumour Surgery (TSMARTS) Team. His research interests include the development mixed and augmented reality in surgery, and the development of molecular biomarkers in solid tumours, including incorporating new imaging techniques into the surgical cancer pathway.
