Susan Neely-Barnes is professor and chair of the School of Social Work at the University of Memphis. She received her Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of Washington in 2005, her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis in 1999, and her Bachelor of Arts from Duke University in 1996. She completed her LICSW in Washington State in 2004. Her post-MSW practice experience was completed while working for 1) the St. Louis Regional Center, part of the Missouri state system that serves individuals with developmental disabilities and 2) the University of Washington Center for Human Development and Disability (CHDD). At the CHDD she was funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau as a LEND (Leadership Excellence in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) pre-doctoral trainee. Dr. Neely-Barnes’ primary area of research is in best practices with people with disabilities and their families. Specifically, her past projects have focused on: the impact of service recipient choice on quality of life; the impact of having a parent with a disability on child mental health; and racial/ethnic differences in the experience of having a family member with an intellectual/developmental disability. Dr. Neely-Barnes is the author of thirty-five peer-reviewed publications and more than thirty conference presentations. She has been the recipient of sixteen research grants totaling more than $11 million.
