Youseung Kim is currently an Associate Professor of Whitney M. Young Jr. School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University. His ultimate goal in research is to enhance understanding of the unique needs and strengths among minorities within their cultural context and to develop guidelines for culturally competent services in social work. Through participating in many research projects including my own research, he has been improving the expertise in developing a feasible research design, data management and analysis skills, and administration of research projects. Especially, he attends to the role of culture in health disparity issues. As a principal investigator of the project, “Educational Intervention for Prostate Cancer Awareness Among African-American Men in the South East Region”, funded by Grants to Support the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Health Services Research Grant Program from U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (1I0CMS331537-01-00), he investigated how some cultural factors such as perceived racism, mistrust of health care providers, and traditional masculine values play a critical role in deterring African American men from taking a prostate cancer screening test. He was also involved in the research projects that examined the cultural influences on the parenting among immigrant parents and youth, and the role of religion and spirituality for Native American Indian older adults and Korean immigrant older adults.
