Carmelita L. Dotson, M.S.S.W., LAPSW, Ed.D., is an Assistant Professor and BSW Coordinator at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in the Department of Social Work and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses. She earned an M.S.S.W. with a concentration in Administration and Planning from the University of Tennessee-Nashville and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Tennessee State University. Dr. Dotson has over 30 years of practice experience in organizational development and management, cultural diversity practice, child welfare, adoption, and families. Dr. Dotson has co-authored peer-reviewed articles, completed book reviews, presented with students, and given peer-reviewed regional, national, and international presentations Since 2010, she has served as faculty advisor for MTSU’s student chapter of the National Association for Black Social Workers. Her research includes effective methods to assess student learning, learning formats for student achievement, service-learning strategies, and inclusive teaching. Other research interests are student food insecurity, disparities in health, social and economic justice, child welfare, cultural competence practice and policy, and culture vs climate in organizational settings, and community needs. In the academic year 2019-2020, Dotson was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award at MTSU. In 2020, she was named the Tempest Award honoree by the American Association of University Women- Murfreesboro chapter for her work uplifting women throughout her career and the 2022 Social Work Educator of the year by the Middle Tennessee branch of the National Association of Social Workers.
