Lauren Shute is a doctoral student in the LSU School of Social Work PhD Program. A former Division I college basketball player, Shute’s research agenda focuses on the behavioral health and well-being within athletics settings. Her doctoral assistantship at LSU is collaborative between its School of Social Work and Athletics Department, where she provides behavioral health counseling to student-athletes and engages in athletics related research. Additionally, she worked for the NFL Player Care Foundation as Operations Coordinator, assisting former NFL players with case management and helped developed programs.
Shute earned her Master's in social work degree from Fordham University in May 2020. During graduate studies in New York City, Shute pioneered the behavioral health field placement program within Fordham University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. In this role, Shute reviewed mental health policies, provided individual and group counseling, and assisted with staff development efforts. Prior to Fordham, Shute covered Auburn University athletics for SEC Country and was a writer for Sports Illustrated and Sports Illustrated Kids. In 2014, Shute earned her baccalaureate degree from University of Richmond, a double major in journalism and political science.
