Brittney Marie Fernandez, BS is a Research Assistant and Lab Research Coordinator at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin (UT). She completed a summer undergraduate research fellowship at the UT Livestrong Cancer Institutes and the Steve Hicks School of Social Work in Austin, Texas in 2021 with Dr. Lailea Noel, PhD, MSW. For the past year, she has continued her work with Dr. Noel in the Department of Social Work as a Lab Research Coordinator and Research Assistant in the Cancer Care and Health Equity Research Lab (CCHER). Fernandez’s research interests seek to connect communities most impacted by cancer disparities with cancer care services by exploring patient-provider communication effects on psychosocial barriers to care. She has a passion for conducting community-based participatory research, and the focus of her current research emphasizes cancer care and health equity for cancer survivors in communities of color, rural communities, and cancer survivors who identify as LGBTQIA+. Fernandez hopes to use the wealth of knowledge gained from the lived experiences of cancer patients and survivors to inform meaningful educational interventions to improve interprofessional education, and directly impact the experiences of historically marginalized communities and their constituents.
