Maria's research and Extension work focus on issues around the intersection of culture, migration, family life, and child and adolescent development. Her research has covered these issues among children, youth and families in Kenya, Mexico, Brazil, Turkey, the United States and the Philippines. Among her current projects, she is studying long-distance parenting strategies among rural-to-urban domestic care workers in the Philippines; socialization goals and ethnotheories of Asian American families in the Midwestern United States, determinants of quality of life in rural ethnic minorities in the United States, and the experiences and determinants of wellbeing among Filipino migrants in Poland. As a Nebraska Extension faculty member, she also works directly in the community to conduct research-based programming, develop educational materials and disseminate information around positive youth development.
