Doug is Professor of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he directs the Center for Prevention Research and Development (CPRD; https://cprd.illinois.edu/), a vibrant appliled research center. He received his Ph.D. in Social Work in 2006 from the University of Iowa. He has almost twenty years of experience in the substance use disorder treatment field as a clinician, clinical supervisor and researcher. He is a clinician at heart and his research focuses on improving treatments for adolescents and young adults suffering from substance use disorders. Dr. Smith has published over 40 articles and chapters on topics like using motivational interviewing to engage adolescents into substance abuse treatments, comparing adolescents and young adults’ reasons for quitting, and comparing treatment outcomes among adolescents randomized to different evidence-based treatments. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), and regularly trains and coaches individuals on the use of Motivational Interviewing. His research program has been generously supported by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the US Department of Justice. On a personal note, he delights in raising his two daughters,doing yoga, playing guitar, reading science fiction, and in being an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
