Flor Avellaneda, Ph.D., is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work, Baylor University Houston campus working on the federally funded project, CHOICES-TEEN: Efficacy of a Bundled Risk Reduction Intervention for Juvenile Justice Females. Dr. Avellaneda graduated with her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Houston in May 2021. Flor Avellaneda’s dissertation research, funded through a dissertation grant from the Research Program on Migration and Health of the Health Initiative of the Americas at UC Berkeley, builds on her professional experience with the intersectional challenges faced by minority women. Using qualitative and quantitative original data approaches in Mexico and secondary data analyses from data collected in the Southeast U.S., her dissertation examines the relationship between migration (in-country and transnational), intimate partner violence, and health, in Mexican migrant women. She completed bachelors and master’s degrees in social work, and prior to her doctoral studies, she served as an advocate for victims of domestic violence at the Family Abuse Center, Executive Director of AVANCE, and faculty member of the Baylor University Diana R. Garland School of Social Work, all in Waco, TX.
