Liana Petruzzi is a second-year, doctoral student at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work. Her research focuses on social work's role in addressing social determinants of health, particularly within healthcare settings. She is also interested in health care policies that could improve health equity such as Medicare for All. Liana has over 5 years of experience with qualitative and quantitative research in interdisciplinary hospital settings at Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospital. She has co-authored multiple publications in journals such as Schizophrenia Research, Psychological Assessment and Qualitative Health Research. More recently, Liana was a medical social worker on an interdisciplinary team at Seton Healthcare. She worked with adults who were uninsured or underinsured with chronic illnesses such as congestive heart failure, diabetes and cancer. She worked side-by-side with physicians, nurses, community health workers and dieticians to assist people that were struggling to navigate the healthcare system. This clinical experience demonstrated the significant impact that social determinants of health such as insurance status, income and zip code have on health outcomes and informs her current research. After receiving her PhD, Liana hopes to work in an academic hospital setting to develop and implement programs that foster health equity in the local community.
