Qi Chen is a PhD candidate at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work. Chen is an oncology social work fellow of the American Cancer Society and a doctoral fellow at the Department of Health Social Work at Dell Medical School at UT. As a scholar at the intersection of oncology, social work and health communication, Qi’s research aims to improve cancer patients' and caregivers’ emotional well-being and perceived social support by enhancing their communication with support networks using digital tools. Her research projects are currently focused on 1) identifying the user behaviors and patterns of social media among cancer survivors with diverse racial/ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds and examining their linkage to emotional well-being (dissertation work); 2) understanding the relationship between cancer patients and caregiver’s dyadic communication and social support; and 3) social workers’ role in an interdisciplinary team on providing evidence-based patient-centered care in healthcare settings. Chen earned her MSW from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining UT Austin, she worked as a project coordinator on several NIH- funded Randomized Clinical Controlled Trials with advanced cancer patients and their caregivers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work and School of Medicine. Her research interests are psychosocial care intervention for cancer patients and caregivers, and dyadic coping and interpersonal communication between cancer patients and social network members.
