Jessica Toft is an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, School of Social Work. Her research and pedagogy centers on examining and challenging the political, economic, and institutional forces that position the social work profession to discipline marginalized and disenfranchised groups. She chairs the Project on the Impacts of Neoliberalism on Social Work Practice in Minnesota. Her research, informed by critical race theory, feminist political economic theory, and democratic political philosophy, critically analyzes social welfare history and policy, the social work profession, and social work practice. She is writing a text for Oxford University Press in which she analyzes the effects of neoliberalism on the profession and proposes an alternative democratic approach informed by social work’s history and potential to be democratic agents. She is a former president of the Minnesota Chapter of National Association of Social Workers.
