Jessica Mendel is a doctoral student at Arizona State University. She recieved her bachelor's degree in English literature from Beloit College in 2007, and her master's degree in special education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010. While working in the public school system, Jessica noticed glaring disparities between her students of color and dominant-culture students. This motivated her to return to school, this time for her master's in social work, which she obainted form the University of Cincinnati in 2013. Jessica then worked in rural community mental health for four years, after which time she accepted a teaching position at Buena Vista Univeristy. While teaching at BVU, Jessica focused on teaching rising social workers how to engage meaningfully with historically silenced individuals and communities. Jessica then returned to school once again to obtain her PhD in social work at Arizona State University, with an emphsis on Critical Whiteness Studies. Jessica believes the only way to truly rectify inequities and reform social work practice and scholarship, is to examine the ways in which Whiteness perminates all aspects of American societal life--but most especially in how we train and teach future social workers to engage with individuals and communities.
