Joyce Towner Williams, a graduate of Furman University, former high school educator, and breast cancer survivor, is the founder and president of Keepers of the Flame Foundation Inc., a Breast Cancer support organization. The mission of Keepers of the Flame Foundation is to shine light into the darkness, empowering breast cancer patients to weather breast cancer both physically and emotionally. Under the direction of Ms. Williams, Keepers of the Flame Foundation advocates and supports women currently and post-treatment, particularly related to PTSD. Keepers of the Flame has worked with therapists in the greater Savannah, Georgia area to start group classes for those recently diagnosed and partnered with local small business owners to support women in need.
Keepers of the Flame regularly collaborates with local hospitals, providing peer-counseling and connecting patients with psychoeducation and psychotherapeutic resources and both local and national support. In addition to her community activism, in 2019 and 2020, Ms. Williams created 52 episodes of a podcast related to breast cancer treatment and intersection of breast cancer and mental health, interviewing local experts in the field, other survivors and community stakeholders engaged in medically-based settings. Finally, through YouTube, Ms. Williams designed, created, and implemented a free, resilience-based curriculum for women in treatment. In her role as the co-primary investigator of this study, Ms. Williams was responsible for research project development, participant recruitment and qualitive data analysis for this project which looks at physician-driven referrals to therapy during breast cancer treatment.
