PhD Candidate
Loyola University Chicago
Chicago, Illinois, United States
Johanna’s interest and passion for working with survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) began when she worked as a patient advocate at Planned Parenthood while an undergraduate at Oberlin College. She went on to pursue her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Chicago where she was an Arthur S. Quern Fellow. Upon receiving her master’s, she traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 19 months where she worked with women and children survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, and continued her research on cross-cultural trauma. Johanna was then appointed a two-year post-master’s fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, where she provided individual and group-based therapy to undergraduate and graduate students and studied several trauma-informed treatment modalities. Never able to stay away from the classroom for long, she then returned to Chicago to pursue her PhD in social work and public policy at Loyola University Chicago where she additionally teaches several master’s courses as an adjunct faculty member. Her current research interests include parenting capacity in the context of IPV as well as international reproductive rights.
