Doctoral Candidate
Oregon State University, United States
Ashley Schuyler is a sexual health researcher and Public Health PhD candidate in the Health Promotion and Health Behavior Program within the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She earned her Master of Public Health in Population and Family Health, with a focus on Sexuality and Health, from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in 2013. She also has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from New York University.
Over the last 15 years, Ms. Schuyler has developed a body of work focused on understanding the complex relationships between sexual health and other aspects of well-being, and identifying priority populations for sexual health intervention. Broadly her research has focused on: 1) short- and long-term health consequences of sexual trauma in both military and civilian populations; and 2) HIV prevention among high-risk populations, including youth in sub-Saharan Africa and African American gay and bisexual men in the U.S. Ms. Schuyler’s doctoral training includes an integration of developmental public health and dissemination and implementation (D&I) science perspectives. This includes serving as Project Director on a National Institutes of Health-funded study to develop an intervention to improve HIV testing in Portland, OR through the dissemination of HIV self-test kits in the LGBTQ community. Her dissertation research will apply D&I concepts to understand how state departments of public health in the U.S. adapted their HIV testing programming during the COVID-19 pandemic.
