Clinical Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Latinx Social Work Certificate Program
University of Denver
Denver, Colorado, United States
Lorena Gaibor is a faculty member and serves as program coordinator of the Latinx Social Work Certificate Program at the Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) at the University of Denver. She received her MSW from Rutgers University in 2009. Ms. Gaibor has been a lifelong activist starting from the age of sixteen. Prior to becoming an educator, she worked in non-profits including as a school social worker for an adult culinary program and as director of a neighborhood redevelopment program in New Jersey.
Her teaching centers on the nexus between critically examining the social environment and the self-inquiry needed as social workers in anti-oppressive praxis. Her goal is to facilitate spaces for critical consciousness to flourish both in and outside of the classroom as students prepare to engage with underserved communities. As a first-generation Latina, Professor Gaibor understands the importance of centering minoritized voices on issues of social and racial justice. Most recently, Professor Gaibor has held leadership positions within GSSW as co-coordinator of the school’s Non-Tenure Track faculty group and also co-leads a Climate & Culture Group for faculty, staff, and doctoral students on The Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture.
