Izumi Sakamoto, Ph.D., MSW, MA, MS is Associate Professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, and Academic Fellow with the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research at the University of Toronto. A former Fulbright scholar, Izumi brings in interdisciplinary training from the US (Ph.D. in Social Work & Social Psychology, MA, MSW from University of Michigan) and Japan (BA, MA from Sophia University). Izumi has expertise in community-based participatory research, arts-based research, qualitative research, anti-oppressive practice, critical consciousness, critical immigration studies and cultural identities. Building on her background in cultural activism and music training, Izumi is currently leading a federally-funded, collaborative research project, the Japanese Canadian Arts and Activism Project (Instagram: _jcaap). She is also leading a collaborative, community-based knowledge synthesis project, the “Streams of Solidarity” Project (Instagram: streamsofsolidarity), focusing on the understanding and use of critical tacit knowledge in community organizing by and for communities of color and immigrant communities. Izumi is also working with a local advocacy organization, the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter on a community-based research project exploring the community members’ experiences with anti-Asian racism.
