Megan Fowler is a graduate of the University of Washington and a current Ph.D. student at the University at Albany (SUNY) in the School of Social Welfare, studying the intersections of contemplative science and transformative change as they relate to critical consciousness, earth-based stewardship, and holistic healing pathways. Best understood when bracketed by the analytic frameworks of coloniality and critical conceptualizations of power, Megan's research seeks to clarify the ways in which contemplative practice traditions can support our ability to interrogate habitual patterns of separation and othering and promote conditions of belonging at individual and collective levels. Megan seeks to build upon critical anti-oppressive research, teaching, and practice foundations towards a more critical and transformative field of social work practice. Alongside her training in critical theoretical, philosophical, and methodological traditions, Megan has over a decade of clinical experience working with complex trauma, addiction, and gender-based violence and is a practicing somatic-based practitioner and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher through Brown University. Megan's future scholarly aspirations include advancing theoretical and practical knowledge to develop more compelling interventions capable of challenging the hegemonic conditions of disembodiment, disconnection, and separation that are replete within modernity and belie our transformative change potential.
