Kathryn Libal, PhD, is Associate Professor of Social Work and Human Rights at the University of Connecticut and Director of the Human Rights Institute. Her scholarship has addressed women’s and children’s rights movements in Turkey; international non-governmental organizational advocacy on behalf of Iraqi and Syrian refugees; and the localization of human rights norms and practices in the United States. She is currently conducting a collaborative qualitative study on the politics and practices of voluntarism and refugee resettlement in the United States. She co-edited Human Rights in the United States: Beyond Exceptionalism (2011) and co-authored Human Rights-Based Approaches to Community Practice in the United States (2015). She also was lead editor of Advancing Human Rights in Social Work Education (2014). She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Human Rights and Social Work and directs an interdisciplinary human rights program, the Human Rights Institute, at the University of Connecticut.
