Caroline Sharkey is a PhD candidate (expected Spring 2023) at the University of Georgia SSW whose research centers the impact of trauma and historical trauma on metro-communities with a focus on collective efficacy and social cohesion to mitigate community violence and promote at-promise youth paradigms. She examines the role of macro/meso-therapeutic interventions, including socially engaged art, digital storytelling, restorative practices, and youth civic engagement to foster positive youth development, empowerment, and reclamation. Caroline’s research includes participatory-action research, intersectional qualitative research, ethnocinema, and arts-based mixed methods approaches. She works to expand the role of social work in non-traditional settings. Additionally, Caroline’s work as an educator addresses curriculum violence using culturally sustaining pedagogies, trauma-informed teaching, and multimodal/experiential learning.
Caroline was a long-time executive director and teacher at the Free School and co-founder of Grand Street Community Arts community center in Albany, NY. She was the Director of Youth Services for Advantage Behavioral Health Systems and oversaw multiple state and federally funded programs for youth mental health, school-based services, early psychosis, suicide prevention, and young adult services. Caroline was a part-time instructor in the UGA’s School of Social Work and formerly the project coordinator for the Trauma Informed Library Transformation (TILT) program embedding trauma-informed services in public libraries.
Caroline is a community psychotherapist and clinical supervisor and Board President for the Georgia Conflict Center, centering restorative practices and court diversion programs. Caroline has a number of publications and presented at more than 200 community presentations, trainings, workshops, and juried conferences.
