Mary Bunn, PhD, LCSW is a Research Scientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Psychiatry. She is also the Deputy Director of Global Mental Health in the Center for Global Health and provides therapy services to survivors of war and forced migration in her clinic at the Neuropsychiatric Institute. Her research program focuses on the long-term and multi-level effects of political violence and forced migration on culturally diverse communities and mental health and psychosocial interventions across diverse contexts. She is particularly interested in therapeutic processes, family, group and community based models of treatment. In addition to mental health outcomes, Dr. Bunn examines how such approaches contribute to the development of social and community resources and facilitate broader restorative and peace building work. Working with the Center for Victims of Torture, she is currently leading a mixed methods study that examines the social-relational consequences of war, political terror and forced migration on Syrian urban refugees in Jordan and explores the effectiveness of group based modalities. She is also Co-investigator on study in Turkey focused on the implementation of evidence-based policy and program development in mental health care for Syrian families. Dr. Bunn’s research program is informed by her extensive clinical and applied experience including fifteen years working with survivors of torture and political violence in the U.S and in post-conflict, post-genocidal and humanitarian settings around the world. She has presented and published widely and has received a number of awards for her work.
