Lecturer in the Discipline of Social Work

Dr. Mashura Akilova is a Lecturer in the Discipline at Columbia University School of Social Work. Her research, teaching, and practice focus on the issues of global social work, child well-being, and migration. She regularly advises the UN and other NGOs on initiatives focused on strengthening the social work and social service workforce in the countries of Eurasia and the Middle East regions. Her current research studies Central Asian migration to the United States and the well-being of non-Syrian refugees in Turkey. She developed intensive training curricula and academic programs on social work adapted for various country contexts. Dr. Akilova teaches courses on international social welfare practice, policy and research. Dr. Akilova is a member of the Council on Global Issues at CSWE and a recipient of the CSWE Partners in International Education and NASW Leadership awards. Her recent co-edited book is titled "Integrative Social Work Practice with Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and Other Forcibly Displaced Persons". Dr. Akilova holds an MSW from Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
