Nancy J. Murakami is an assistant professor at Pacific University in Oregon, USA, where she teaches across the master of social work curriculum. Dr. Murakami is a licensed clinical social worker with domestic and international experience in direct practice, program development, supervision, and training in the fields of trauma and refugee mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. She is co-founder, technical advisor, and clinical supervisor of Friends of Kisoro, a community-based organization in Uganda that provides psychosocial support to refugees and the communities around the refugee camp. She has recently held clinical and leadership positions at the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture in NYC and at Burma Border Projects in Thailand.
Dr. Murakami teaches courses and course modules on social work practice with survivors of persecution, torture, and forced displacement, and she conducts trainings domestically and internationally on topics including trauma-informed care, refugee services, social work with survivors of torture and forced displacement, working with interpreters, and service provider wellbeing. She is co-editor of Integrative Social Work Practice with Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Other Forcibly Displaced Persons, a book in the Essential Clinical Social Work series, and co-editor of Trauma and Recovery on War's Border: A Guide for Global Health Workers, a book in the Geisel Series in Global Health and Medicine. Dr. Murakami received her Doctor of Social Welfare in Clinical Social Work from New York University and her Master of Social Work from Columbia University. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malawi, Africa.
