Dr. Melissa Hirschi is Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of Memphis. She received her MSW from Boston University in 2007 and her joint sociology and social work PhD from Boston University in 2017. Her research focuses on first responders, community health, and health disparities. She is also interested in better understanding power, including the role of power in racism, oppression, and stigma. Dr. Hirschi has teaching experience both online and in traditional classroom settings, and is committed to educating the next generation of social workers as well as continuing to strengthen the profession. Her teaching has focused primarily on research methods and fostering critical thinking among students in MSW programs. She has extensive practice experience working with members of disadvantaged and marginalized communities such as formerly homeless and incarcerated women and as a clinical caseworker with the Division of Health and Family Services in Utah.
