Alicia Hawley-Bernardez is an Assistant Professor at Our Lady of the Lake University. I began my social work journey at Texas Christian University where I obtained my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree. I knew early on that social work was for me. I grew up in a family of caretakers – nurses, social workers, ministers, teachers – so social work was a natural fit for me. After completing my BSW, I immediately entered the Master’s in Social Work (MSW) program at University of Texas at Arlington. At the end of my MSW program, I got a full-time job at a domestic violence agency where I served as the Transitional Housing Coordinator. Afterwards, I worked for a police department as a Victim Advocate Program Manager where I worked with any and all victims of crime. During my time at the police department, I also began teaching as an adjunct professor at TCU. It was during this time that I determined that I wanted to pursue a PhD. I attended University of Texas at Arlington for my PhD where my dissertation related to issues pertaining to intimate partner violence. My specific areas of interest and research include intimate partner violence, teen dating violence, gender-based issues, human trafficking, and pedagogical issues in social work education.
