In New Jersey, she found herself listening to the testimonies of mail-order Filipino brides and the abusive relationships they had endured with their partners. Guia holds a Doctorate in Social Work (Clinical Social Work) from the School of Social Policy and Practice, University of Pennsylvania, a Masters in Social Work from the Asian Social Institute in the Philippines, and her Bachelor's in Social Work from the Philippine Women's University.
