Margarita Artavia holds joint appointments as a Clinical Professor of Field Education at the University of Southern California, Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work (since 1996), and Professor of Clinical Dentistry with the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry (since 2016). In Social Work she teaches graduate courses in Clinical Practice and conducts professional training seminars/workshops for mental health professionals, administrators, and student interns from diverse professions on Communication, Culture, Self-reflection, Cultural Humility, and other topics. At Ostow, where she holds a 40% position on the Dental Transformation Initiative team, she reviews and oversees critical elements of the associated Social Work MSW Internship Program.
Prior to her faculty field education post, Artavia was the coordinator at the Inter-Professional Initiative in South Central Los Angeles and served as an External Field Instructor for the Interdisciplinary Project working with graduate and doctoral students from multiple USC Schools working to serve at-risk children and their families in urban centers. Furthermore, Artavia was previously Medical Social Worker for the Eisner Pediatric and Family Medical Center for 15 years where she chaired the Domestic Violence Project, was the Director of Mental Health Services for the Venice Family Clinic, and served as a Psychiatric Social Worker for the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic. Among Artavia’s honors include: a 2006 Teaching Award from her students, the 2010 and 2020 Jane Addams Faculty Award in recognition of her academic, administrative and moral support to students. In 2012 Hutto Patterson Foundation’s Distinguished Faculty Award for teaching excellence, among others.
