Professor Chathapuram (Ram) Ramanathan is the Director of the School of Social Work at Illinois State University. He has presented over 50 papers and workshops in 18 countries. Featured speaker in 2002, through prestigious US Speaker series program in the conference “Religious Pluralism and Democratic Societies: United States and Southeast Asia”; published over 50 refereed articles, book chapters, and co-authored four books; served CSWE as a site visitor for over 20 years; served on several agency boards; facilitated a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Association of Social Workers and the Indian Society of Professional Social Workers (ISPSW) for the first time in the history of these professional organizations; undertaken multiple overseas initiatives.
Noteworthy honors of Ramanathan’s include recognition as a Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Scholar at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru; and Senior Fulbright Specialist, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (established in 1936) in Mumbai, India. Was awarded tribute by the governor of Michigan for contributions to diversity, religious harmony, peace, as well as pro bono consultations to Michigan economic development. The University of Illinois’s Social Work Alumni awarded Ramanathan, Community Achievement Award for 2020-2021; Conferred Jim Billups International Social Development Leadership Award by the International Consortium for Social Development; coauthored article on Mental Health, Immigrants, Refugees, was awarded the best article by the National Association of Human Rights Workers. Ramanathan is the founding chairman of Michigan Indo American Democratic Caucus (a first statewide caucus in the history of United States for Indo Americans).
