Tanzilya Oren is a Ph.D. candidate in Social Work at the Graduate School of Social Service at Fordham University. She defended her thesis in the Spring of 2022, with the thesis titled "New Voices of Change: Transformative Community Organizing of New Immigrants in the U.S. A Case-Study of RUSA LGBTQ+." Tanzilya started a postdoctoral research position at Weill Cornell Medicine at the Human Rights Impact Lab in November 2022. She researches asylum and refugee policies and practices, using engaged research and community-based participatory research methods. After a career in women’s rights and civil society development in Uzbekistan and South Africa, since 2010, she has worked in New York in immigrant services. Tanzilya advises in several programs and projects serving asylum seekers in New York. She holds an MSc in Social Work from Columbia University and a combined MA and BA in Teaching and English from Samarkand University, Uzbekistan.
