Nina Johnson is a second-year doctoral student at the Indiana University School of Social Work. Nina received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Coe College and her Master of Science of Social Work from Columbia University.
Nina’s research interests include understanding the holistic health needs of Black and multicultural undergraduate and graduate students. Nina is committed to understanding the needs and barriers of Black and multicultural students accessing holistic wellness resources through a multidimensional and social justice lens. Nina is also interested in how campuses function as ecosystems for health empowerment, habits, and promotion for the overall well-being for students.
Nina’s work is rooted in the values of social justice and is student and inclusivity centered. Nina’s research is community-engaged and is committed to student well-being and flourishing. Nina’s research interests involve understanding the intersections of Black college students' health and the systemic societal issues that can impact their living and health ecosystems. Nina aims to create collaboration, dialogue, and action around the topics of health, holistic wellness, health access, and systemic racism in higher education learning and living spaces.
Nina has research experience in human development, technology, virtual reality, health access, and suicidality among college students. Nina is a health and wellness devotee committed to changing the language around health and wellness to be more inclusive for growing diverse campuses. Nina has experience working with quantitative and qualitative data methods. Nina has co-authored a paper about suicide prevention among college students before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
