Doctoral Student
University of Texas at Austin
Austin, Texas, United States
Tatiana Londoño is a doctoral student at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work. She is a first-generation Latina student born in Colombia and raised in Miami, Florida. Tatiana graduated from Vassar College with a B.A. in Neuroscience and Behavior and from The University of Texas at Austin with an M.S.S.W. Professionally, Tatiana worked in various settings such as a middle school and a primary care clinic providing services to mostly Spanish-speaking families who experienced immigration-related trauma. As Tatiana observed the barriers of immigrants and refugees in these contexts, she realized her passion resided in working with these populations. As a doctoral student, Tatiana continues to volunteer her time helping immigrant families in detention prepare for the credible fear interview and orienting asylum-seeking families at resource centers in Texas. Her research interests focus on how immigration-related and sociocultural stressors affect the mental health and wellbeing of Latinx immigrants. Currently, Tatiana is working on two studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH): one with Dr. Luis Zayas on the effects of prolonged detention of asylum-seeking families from Central America, and the other with Dr. Rubén Parra-Cardona that culturally adapts a parenting intervention by integrating immigration-related challenges, discrimination, and biculturalism. She hopes to continue using her teaching and research experience to integrate sociocultural and immigration stressors into preventative intervention and education. Tatiana’s ultimate goal is to positively impact both immigration policy and social work education with immigrant families.
