With over ten years of experience in government, working for a social service agency, Emily Loveland, MSW has developed a keen interest in public policy design and implementation and the impact these policies have on social justice. Working with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program in particular has brought to light how food insecurity impacts a number of other socioeconomic factors, such as employment, housing, and education. Recognizing that policies are overarching regulations meant to serve as many as possible while also applying the person-in-environment perspective, Emily uses research to discover gaps in policies and programs to investigate how they disproportionately impact communities and individuals. Using a human rights approach, Emily strives to tie together the micro and macro perspectives, uplifiting the voices of communities impacted by policies to further examine structural or systemic injustices in order to propose actionable and effective change.
