Currently I am in my first year in the University of Pittsburgh's school of Social Work. I am especially passionate about prison reform and I hope to be an advocate for change, while also maximizing the voices of incarcerated folk who are systemically silenced. I was born and raised in Singapore, but within the summer going into my junior year of high school I moved to America just outside of Pittsburgh. This transition was especially difficult as I was quickly illuminated to the rigid & discriminative social norms within my new found environment. During my undergrad at Pitt, I explored my passions for social justice and have grown especially interested in institutional levels of discrimination and how they in turn effect daily experiences. This led me to interdisciplinary research which studied the effects of parental incarceration on children, and just how much it can adversely affect a child life. Furthermore, I just completed a project in conjunction with Allegheny County Jail and the University of Pittsburgh which surveyed all the current incarcerated folk within Allegheny county jail. With these surveys, we will move forward with petitions for change within the context of prisoner rights.
