Johara is a third-year PhD student at the University of Minnesota School of Social Work. In 2012, Johara received her B.A. in psychology at Carleton College where her senior thesis focused on predictors of negative cross-group attitudes between Somali immigrants and native-born Americans in rural Minnesota. Then, after earning her MSW from Salem State University in 2016, she worked as an intensive in-home family therapist in both the greater Boston area (MA) and Hennepin county (MN). During her time working with families at high risk of experiencing family separation, Johara founded The Kifayah Initiative, which focuses on encouraging Muslim community members to become more involved in the issue of foster care by providing workshops and small information sessions on what foster care is, why it is a socio-political concern, and why/how to get involved. Johara currently works as a research assistant for Dr. Saida Abdi. Johara's primary areas of interest are child welfare history and policy, systemic racism and racialization, and the intersection of child welfare and immigration policies.
