Elisabeth (Beth) Counselman-Carpenter (she/her/hers)’s is an Associate Professor at Adelphi University's School of Social Work. Her research, scholarship and teaching focuses on post-traumatic growth and decreasing barriers to service provision, particularly with the LGBTQIA+ community and the use of technology in teaching and learning. Her current project is a mixed-methods study exploring the preferences of breast cancer survivors related to physician-driven referrals for therapy. Dr. C. specializes in qualitative and mixed methods research. Other recent projects have included examining the practices of self-care and mentoring in retention of faculty with marginalized identities and analyzing secondary data to understand factors of post-traumatic growth in transgender and nonbinary individuals who have completed transition, as well as a funded project exploring exploring the use of PhotoVoice in teaching Gender and Sexuality in online courses. Her co-edited and co-written book: Working with Grief, & Traumatic Loss: Theory, Practice, Personal Reflection & Self-care for Clinicians was published by Cognella Publishing in November 2019. Her second text, a reader for Human Behavior courses entitled Decolonizing Human Behavior: An Anti-Oppressive Reader was released in October 2021. She has published work in the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health, the Journal of Social Work Education, the Journal of Social Work & Human Rights, and the Journal of Interpersonal Violence. Beth has a BA in Sociology from the University of Richmond, an MSW from New York University, and a PhD from Adelphi University. Also, she maintains a small private practice and community DEI consultancy practice.
