Those who attend the presentation will receive information on Prochaska & DiClemente’s Stages of Change Model, instructions on how to complete the 30 Day Detox assignment, and a description of common issues students experience throughout the thirty days.
The presentation begins with a video called "Stuck on an Escalator" that is tied to motivation. After the video is shown, audience volunteers will be asked to talk briefly about what they are stuck on in life and why they can't just get off the metaphorical escalator. The entire audience will then review a handout titled "The Cycle of Change" developed by Prochaska & DiClemente from the perspective of where they are in the change process. The presentation will then transition into a PowerPoint overview of Change Theory and how it can be used to teach students about addiction.
The presentation ends with a detailed overview of "The 30 Day Detox" assignment and the construction of a qualitative research paper. Instructions for student safety and a review of issues students sometimes experience during the detox process is included.
