Media coverage of post-surgical mortality/morbidity is not uncommon. As pediatric otolaryngologists, we take on the most complex patients. Their care is not suited for community practices and these patient’s need tertiary care hospitals. As such, we are taking on more risk. Having a negative patient outcome, whether it is from a surgical complication or not, is incredibly difficult for the surgeon, trainees and the patient families. There are also additional outside stressors that physicians must overcome. This includes managing defaming social media, navigating medico-legal concerns, career moves, sustaining our own health, taking care of the financial and emotional well-being of our families, and maintaining a harmonious work-life balance. The goal of this panel discussion will be to help young pediatric otolaryngologists know how to address some stressors in our field and discuss management options for a fulfilling career in pediatric otolaryngology. ... rather than a complicated work or personal situation debilitating you... you can have the strength and support to continue.
