Julie L. Wei, MD, is a Pediatric Otolaryngologist, currently Division Chief of Otolaryngology/Audiology at the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, and immediate past surgeon-in-chief. She is also the Director of GME Wellbeing Initiative for NCH, Chair of Otolaryngology Education, and a Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at University of Central Florida College of Medicine.
After experiencing high degree of burnout by 2009-2010, Dr. Wei re-engaged in her career and life, and served for 3 years as President of Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) at KU Medical center. She resurrected and led the development of a multi-disciplinary group of women leaders with focus on mentoring, recognition, and career development for School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Allied Health Professionals. Since 2012, Dr. Wei has given an instruction course on burnout to wellbeing at AAOHNS, and has given numerous presentations nationally and internationally on this topic. In 2019, Dr. Wei created an immediate access line for all trainees, physicians, and advanced practitioners at her hospital, where 24/7/365 they have access to PhD psychologists. She also created a hospital medical staff Health and Wellness Committee, and de novo ACGME wellbeing program for pediatric residents and fellows, including 1 on 1 mental health orientation for residents, every division chief/Chair, and transformed the culture.
Dr. Wei just received nomination as next President-elect for the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, is a member of AAOHNS Taskforce on Wellbeing, the Triological Society, American Bronchoesophagological Association, and past President of SENTAC (Society of Ear, Nose,Throat Advances in Children). She is Associate Editor for the Journal of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and currently Associate Editor for ENTtoday and writes for the RxWellness column on quarterly basis. She is married and considers her husband and their 15-year old daughter Claire her greatest blessing in life.
